In a Nutshell

Youthful rapper continues his rise after a year that saw the release of his hit single, "Rack City," and a beat-laden album of rhymes

The Fine Print

Rappers rely on intricate rhymes when boasting of their skills, which explains why MC Orange never quite broke into the mainstream. Watch a master weave words with this GrouponLive deal to see Tyga at the Congress Theater. For $17, you get one ticket for general admission on Sunday, September 16, at 6 p.m. (up to a $29.94 value, including all fees). Doors open at 5 p.m.

A youthful mixtape maven and member of Young Money, Compton-native Tyga catapulted himself to standout notoriety in 2011 with his raunchy, sinuous single "Rack City." Praised by Pitchfork as a "genius pop moment," the song's primal beat and growling, hedonistic lyrics launched it to a No. 2 spot on the Billboard rap chart and, once transformed into the more family-friendly "Lob City," a spot as the unofficial anthem of the LA Clippers. His 2012 studio debut album, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, continues his versifying evolution, deepening songs with "a chameleon-like skill that lets him go from melancholy to mean without a hitch," according to Allmusic.com. Fellow 20-somethings Kirko Bangz and Iggy Azalea, as well as Sterling Simms and Jinsu, warm up the crowds with dense beats, gleefully lascivious lyrics, and space heaters disguised as curiously immobile moshers.

Congress Theater

With its gargantuan ballroom space, the Congress Theater is just as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the ears. The former movie palace, which boasts a curved upper deck lined with red-velvet seats, beckons concertgoers to its lushly vintage confines for country-music shows, bluegrass festivals, and electronic-music performances. Regardless of the act, audience members revel beneath an ornately decorated domed ceiling that's perfect for jetpack escapes when the dance floor gets too crowded. The theater also is branching out into its surrounding neighborhood by filling attached storefronts with restaurants, small grocers, and other community partners.
