In a Nutshell

Annual celebration of doo-wop features eight legendary acts, including girl group The Chantels, Tommy “16 Candles” Mara, and Kenny Vance

The Fine Print

Rock 'n' roll first became popular in America during the 1950s, much like the catch phrase "I got power like I'm Eisenhower." Hear something catchy with this GrouponLive deal to see the Pittsburgh Doo Wop Holiday Reunion XI at Consol Energy Center on Friday, December 7, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Choose between the following seating options:

  • For $15, you get one ticket for seating in sections 105–109 or in the rear of sections 116–120 (up to a $31 value, including all fees).
  • For $22, you get one ticket for seating in sections 101–104, 110–115, or 121–122 (up to a $44.25 value, including all fees).

This year's Doo Wop Holiday Reunion show celebrates the 11th congregation of classic rock 'n' roll show bands as snappy, rafter-reaching harmonies reverberate through the ace acoustical environs of Consol Energy Center. Eight legendary acts fill the bill, transporting audiences back to a bygone era of sock hops, polka-dot dresses, and barbershops built out of candy canes. Kenny Vance and the Planotones, whose frontman originally charmed audiences as the leader of Jay and the Americans, summon Lovers Lane rendezvouses with their falsetto-laden hit “Looking for an Echo.” Famed all-girl group The Chantels, known for hits such as “Look in My Eyes” and “Maybe,” delight with knockout harmonies that landed them in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.

The Duprees celebrate the 50th anniversary of their slow-dance smash “You Belong to Me,” and The Edsels get the entire room singing along to “Rama Lama Ding Dong.” Other veterans filling the doo-wop roster include Herb Cox and the Cleftones, old-school Brooklyn crooners The Capris, and Tommy Mara and the Crests, whose frontman proves why he’s called “the Meatloaf of doo-wop” by rolling in bread crumbs and ketchup.

The Groupon Guide to: Impromptu Holiday Games

With holiday season in full swing, there's no shortage of dinner parties to attend. If your host doesn't own any board games, save the evening by suggesting a game that can be played without gaming equipment:

Bang, Bang, Hear, Hear: Have one person grab a fork, spoon, and knife. After everyone else closes their eyes, the person holding the utensils will start banging one of the three against the dinner table. The first person to correctly guess what the banger is banging wins and gets to leave the game.

Noise Town: Break off into groups of two. Each pair builds a unique city by creating a soundscape using the sounds that come out of their mouths. The team that builds the loudest town gets the grand prize—getting to wait outside until the other teams stop.

My Country, Your Country: One person starts the game by approaching another person and saying "My country." The person has to respond, as quickly as possible, "Your country?" The first person then must say "My country" again, this time faster than the second person said "Your country?" This keeps going until everyone feels compelled to simultaneously shout "The holidays: are these not the finest times of our years?" Then everyone gets to leave.

Should December be called Game-cember?
