In a Nutshell

‘90s legends responsible for the smash hits “Interstate Love Song” and “Plush” join piano-driven rockers Crash Kings

The Fine Print

Without music, concerts wouldn't exist and funk would just be the smell emanating from an old sock filled with corn. Lend an ear to this GrouponLive deal to see Stone Temple Pilots and Crash Kings at Copps Coliseum on Tuesday, August 21, at 8 p.m. For $36, you get one ticket for seating in price level 2 in sections 110–120 (a $72.50 value, including all fees).

In the time between its 1993 debut, Core, and its 2001 album, Shangri-La Dee Da, Stone Temple Pilots kept radio stations well-fed with the gritty, grunge-flavoured arena rock it inserted into instant classics such as “Interstate Love Song,” “Plush,” and “Wicked Garden.” Fans then endured Stone Temple Pilots’ near-decade-long absence before the band grabbed its guitars, re-Sharpied its tattoos, and reunited for its sixth, self-titled album in 2010. The record shot to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 behind infectious singles such as “Between the Lines,” whose unabashed chorus declares, “You were always my favourite drug / Even when we used to do drugs.” When the new collection of songs was released, Spin's William Goodman raved, “The new album is classic STP. Its 12 tracks have the band’s signature blend of tuneful melodies and rock guitar crunch, psychedelic solos, and impressive crooning courtesy of Scott Weiland.”

Scott Weiland, Eric Kretz, and Robert and Dean DeLeo have continued their momentum in their live shows, working the crowd with a mix of beloved hits and newer songs. Before Stone Temple Pilots command the stage, the Crash Kings showcase their loud-and-proud rock ‘n’ roll. A big-bellied bass sets the foundation for singer Tony Beliveau’s Jack White–evoking yowl on “Mountain Man,” whereas the slower “Come Away” reels in the roaring rhythm section for a pleading, heartfelt love song.

The Groupon Guide to: Heavy-Metal Lyrics

One the hardest things about writing heavy-metal music, be it of the speed, black, or death variety, is coming up with appropriately ruthless ideas for songs. Here, then, is a list of ideas which should serve as adequate heavy-metal song premises. Please send any completed versions of these songs to cat@groupon.com.

  • A black tower rises forth from beneath a city. The people are scared of the tower. The sun turns to dust and the moon turns to raw hamburger meat.

  • A little boy has been waiting all day for cookies. He knows they will be delicious. When he comes home, his house is gone but the cookie jar is sitting alone in the yard. The cookie jar is full of eyeballs.

  • The Frost Giants of Fjallmuir revolt from the tyrannical rule of Orlor. They use dead trees as cudgels.

  • A cool car that is also fast

  • Pretty much any gloaming, reaving, sundering, or purging

  • A boy is lost in the big city. Two ruthless thieves will stop at nothing to kill him. He tortures them using various improvised brutal weapons. He befriends a beggar who can talk to birds.

  • A sad king laments the pile of screaming rats that the wizard turned his wife into.

  • A guitar comes to life and zaps lightning at the houses of everyone who was ever mean to you, the listener. The guitar also shoots fire and becomes invisible if bad guys are around. The guitar is your best friend and you get to ride an eagle with your friend Kenneth.

“The Purging of the Winterfalcons” would be a good heavy metal song or band name.
