Located just off the shores of Corpus Christi Bay, Whataburger Field sizzles with excitement during all Hooks home games as they continue the 2012 season against Texas League rivals. As a Double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, the Hooks have helped launch the careers of 41 big leaguers during their seven-year history. First baseman and lefty power hitter Jonathan Singleton hopes to be the next to lift off after starting the season with 42 RBIs and 11 home runs in his first 65 games, almost matching the previous early-season record of 3,000 simultaneous homers after a long ball shredded in an airplane engine.

At Whataburger Field, a massive scoreboard towers over the left side, flashing players' stats throughout the game and flanking the spectacular view of Harbor Bridge and the USS Lexington anchored in the bay. The stadium's stockpile of family-friendly amenities includes a 27-foot rock wall and the Driscoll Children's Hospital Kids Zone, an interactive playground with a regulation youth baseball diamond, on which local and regional teams compete before each Hooks game. Fans can also take advantage of a season-long schedule of promotions, including kids' backpacks for the first 1,500 child attendees on July 22, which provides a safe satchel for youngsters to carry home their snagged foul balls or captured mascots.

Corpus Christi Hooks

After joining the Texas League in 2005, the Corpus Christi Hooks wasted little time capturing a title, but they still had a little patience before reeling in their prize. On September 14, 2006, the team took 14 innings to defeat the Wichita Wranglers 8-7 in a five-hour barnburner and bring home the championship. But while it was only the Hooks’ first title as members of the Texas League, it was the 10th overall championship in franchise history—a legacy that stretches back to 1968, when the franchise began in Tennessee as the Memphis Blues. Since moving to Corpus Christi, the Hooks have helped launch the careers of more than 40 big leaguers. Much of that success has unfolded before packed crowds at Whataburger Field, whose exterior of corrugated steel and bricks pays homage to the cotton warehouses that previously occupied the site. Inside, fans enjoy numerous amenities, including a rock wall, an interactive playground, and views of the USS Lexington, anchored out on the bay to defend Houston from any baseballs hit out of the park.
