The Elephant Man

Based on the true story of a man with a deforming genetic disorder that made him an outcast in Victorian England, playwright Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man snagged the Tony Award for Best Play after its Broadway debut in 1979. In the surrealistic script, a young doctor discovers the titular character, whose real name is John Merrick, performing as an act in a carnival freak show. The doctor rescues Merrick from the fairgrounds and takes him to his own home, where the misfit sheds light onto his artist’s soul and avoids his cruel former carnival boss. Audiences follow the talented cast through the show's thematic waters that question traditional notions of what is beautiful, what is ugly, and what is the most visually appealing width of barbed wire to tattoo onto an ankle.

The Foreigner

Written by Larry Shue, The Foreigner revolves around two Englishmen: pathologically shy Charlie Baker and gruff staff sergeant Froggy LeSuer. When Froggy is sent to southern Georgia on a military mission, he decides to bring along his extremely timid friend, Charlie, along for the ride, setting the stage for hilariously harrowing experiences involving spilled secrets, good-hearted townsfolk, and accent-driven phonetics battles.

Legally Blonde the Musical

Based on the movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde weaves the bubbly tale of Elle Woods, a sorority president who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law to rekindle their romance. The award-winning musical follows Elle's defeats and triumphs as she struggles to succeed at law, discover self-respect outside a relationship, and finally find new love. Clever, fast-paced lyrics mix with upbeat tunes in songs such as "Omigod You Guys" and "Gay or European," supported by rug-cutting numbers that enliven the show and disappoint kids who thought dance was a rebellion against their lawyer parents.

Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre

At Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre, three troupes—the Actor’s Cafe, the Children’s Theatre, and Cullity Hall productions—celebrate great storytelling with seasons full of classic plays and child-friendly adaptations. The Actor’s Cafe’s small, adult casts perform in a 60-seat cabaret, and the grownups and growing-ups of the other companies play on the main stage's still-intimate 132-seat theater-in-the-round.
