In a Nutshell

A Tony-winning meditation on society's notions of beauty, a Southern military farce, and a musical adaptation of a beloved romantic comedy

The Fine Print

A good theater troupe can convince people that the strange is commonplace, much like a child explaining to cashiers why all million-dollar bills have Batman on them. Suspend your disbelief with this GrouponLive deal to see a show at Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre. For $14, you get one ticket (up to a $27 value, including all fees). Choose from the following shows:

  • General The Elephant Man (February 8–March 10). Tickets are general admission. Shows take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
  • The Foreigner (March 22–May 19). Tickets are general admission. Shows take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
  • Legally Blonde the Musical (April 12–May 11). Seating will be best available at the time of redemption. Shows take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. as well as Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

The Elephant Man

Based on the true story of a man with a deforming genetic disorder that made him an outcast in Victorian England, playwright Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man snagged the Tony Award for Best Play after its Broadway debut in 1979. In the surrealistic script, a young doctor discovers the titular character, whose real name is John Merrick, performing as an act in a carnival freak show. The doctor rescues Merrick from the fairgrounds and takes him to his own home, where the misfit sheds light onto his artist’s soul and avoids his cruel former carnival boss. Audiences follow the talented cast through the show's thematic waters that question traditional notions of what is beautiful, what is ugly, and what is the most visually appealing width of barbed wire to tattoo onto an ankle.

The Foreigner

Written by Larry Shue, The Foreigner revolves around two Englishmen: pathologically shy Charlie Baker and gruff staff sergeant Froggy LeSuer. When Froggy is sent to southern Georgia on a military mission, he decides to bring along his extremely timid friend, Charlie, along for the ride, setting the stage for hilariously harrowing experiences involving spilled secrets, good-hearted townsfolk, and accent-driven phonetics battles.

Legally Blonde the Musical

Based on the movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Legally Blonde weaves the bubbly tale of Elle Woods, a sorority president who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law to rekindle their romance. The award-winning musical follows Elle's defeats and triumphs as she struggles to succeed at law, discover self-respect outside a relationship, and finally find new love. Clever, fast-paced lyrics mix with upbeat tunes in songs such as "Omigod You Guys" and "Gay or European," supported by rug-cutting numbers that enliven the show and disappoint kids who thought dance was a rebellion against their lawyer parents.

Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre

At Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre, three troupes—the Actor’s Cafe, the Children’s Theatre, and Cullity Hall productions—celebrate great storytelling with seasons full of classic plays and child-friendly adaptations. The Actor’s Cafe’s small, adult casts perform in a 60-seat cabaret, and the grownups and growing-ups of the other companies play on the main stage's still-intimate 132-seat theater-in-the-round.

The Groupon Guide to: Novelty Glasses

While traditional glasses are a handsomeness-destroying nuisance worn out of necessity rather than choice, many eccentric types have put a twist on the formula to come up with a popular variety of "novelty" spectacles. Which one is right for you?

Shutter Shades: You can see out, but no one else can see in, thus preserving for your future wife the honor of looking into your eyes for the first time.

Groucho Glasses: Styled after a popular comedian born in 1890, the world's last remaining pair of Groucho glasses will be recovered in 2029 by a boy rooting around in his grandfather's attic. The boy will briefly try them on, turning to his cousin to say "Hey, Jason, look—I'm a mustache man."

Dangling Slinky Eyeballs: These are gross, man—get 'em outta here!

Oversized Sunglasses: If regular sunglasses send the message "I'm here to party," then these oversized versions loudly declare "I am the party." If you're not wearing a pair of these right now, go back to bed and try life again tomorrow.

Can a pair of novelty glasses transform your entire life? Find out here.
