Music and drinks have long been enjoyed together, from turn-of-the-century gentlemen sipping scotch around the Victrola to modern gentlemen sipping scotch around the Victrola in a 3-D holographic recreation chamber. Some things never change with this GrouponLive deal to attend Haunted in the House at the Detroit Opera House. For $20, you get one general admission and one drink ticket on Friday, October 26, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. (up to a $45 value, including all fees).

With the chandeliers dimmed and replaced with a red haze of lights, the pillars and artwork that adorn the Detroit Opera House’s walls take on a new, grim shade. Costumed guests ascend to the lobby’s balcony, brushing away bands of caution tape as they seek out the cash bar or the mysterious Subway room, where they can stifle their hunger for brains by noshing on sandwiches and candy instead. DJ Tom T is the party’s mad sound scientist, experimenting with hit songs before seeing how long the crowd can put up with the Ghostbusters theme on loop. Attendees are strongly encouraged to come dressed up, because there will be a total of $1,000 in cash prizes for awesome and unique costumes, including $500 for best overall. All proceeds from the night benefit the Detroit Opera House.

The Detroit Opera House sprawls across an entire city block, its imposing size and elegant design belying its circuitous history. Originally opened in 1922 as a vaudeville palace—and designed by the renowned architect behind the city's Fillmore and Fox theaters—the space played host to live music and recorded films. But despite the venue’s remarkable acoustics and cheery demeanor, it sat abandoned for long stretches of time over the next few decades. Luckily, fate intervened in 1988 when the opera acquired the building, starting an ambitious remodeling project that culminated in an opening gala featuring Luciano Pavarotti. The opera house’s modern iteration mimics the design of Europe's greatest performance spaces, with an the ornate main hall adorned with vaulted ceilings and sumptuous red curtains.
