For the 22nd year running, Evangel Cathedral dazzles the D.C. region with a Christmas pageant that blends music, dance, storytelling, and sheer extravagant spectacle. Some of the country’s most soulful gospel singers lead the festivities and get the audience clapping, including Grammy-winning sister act Mary Mary, chart-topping musical royalty BeBe and CeCe Winans, and pastor and hitmaker Marvin Sapp, known for such impassioned songs as “Never Would Have Made It” and “The Best in Me.” Belting out traditional carols such as “O Come All Ye Faithful,” devotionals such as “Jesus Loves Me,” and original songs, the cast of more than 200 visits Christmases in Biblical times, the Victorian era, the present day, and the inevitable dystopian future ruled by evergreen overlords.

Animal performers that include camels, goats, horses, and dogs join the celebrities on stage by as they tell the story not only of Jesus’s birth, but also of his life and his sacrifice. Meanwhile, special effects and a laser light show further open up Evangel Cathedral’s sprawling space, and new scenes added this year keep the beloved tradition growing and evolving through 2.5 hours and 10 set pieces. Last year, the Washington Informer noted that the performance “left the audience teary-eyed” and “put everyone in the spirit of praise,” making it “one for the category of great Christmas musicals.”

Evangel Cathedral

Bishop Don Meares and his wife, Marion deliver large-scale worship services and celebrity-studded events at Evangel Cathedral. In addition to prayer services, the faith center hosts Bible study classes, mentorship opportunities, and even a spiritual hotline that parishioners can call in times of distress. Women's groups and youth groups foster an even greater sense of community among the congregation. The church also has many specialized facilities: a bookstore provides edifying materials, and a banquet hall called Camelot invites diners to try and pull a knife out of the mystical block of butter in the kitchen.

The Groupon Guide to: Famous Hats

Every historical figure of any significance wore a now instantly recognizable hat, synonymous with their name:

  • The Napoleon Hat: Military bicorn, worn side to side or "athwart" to serve as a better perch for enlisted falcons
  • The Benjamin Franklin Hat: Small brass beanie with a large conductive spire jutting out of it, topped with a small eyelet for tethering a kite
  • The Davy Crockett Hat: Famously a strict vegetarian, Crockett's "coonskin" was actually just a matted blob of reeds and buffalo chips that he moistened hourly from his canteen
  • The Hercules Hat: Just a minotaur skull

Honorable Mention: Jughead's "hat" from the Archie comics is actually a crown (?) made of gray paper (?) with miscellaneous shapes affixed to it. Details remain vague because it is proven that overscrutinizing Jughead's hat makes you go insane.

Which historical figure had the most famous hat? The answer may surprise you.
