In a Nutshell

Venerable orchestra’s repertoire includes grandiose symphonies, swing music with tap dancing, and a world-spanning song cycle

The Fine Print

Classical music boosts listeners' brain functions and energy levels, which is why every child should ingest a well-rounded harpsichord each morning. Treat your noggin to a mellifluous meal with this GrouponLive deal to see a Florida Orchestra concert. For $15, you get one adult ticket for level B seating at a performance at Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Ruth Eckerd Hall, or Mahaffey Theater (a $30 value). Doors open one hour before showtime. Choose from the following concerts:

Masterworks: Symphonie Fantastique

Renowned German pianist Peter Rösel joins the orchestra for an evening of grandiose arrangements. Under the baton of guest conductor Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Rösel takes center stage for Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto no. 1, kicking off the performance with a flurry of aggressive chords and finger-tying scale runs before slowing into a bittersweet refrain. Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz no. 1 challenges ears with discordant themes and irregular rhythms, and a marathon performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique takes audiences through the three moods of symphonic music: intensity, tranquility, and one note played by a tuba for 10 minutes straight.

Pop Series: A Night at the Cotton Club

A jazzy set transports the audience to Harlem’s Cotton Club, encompassing such beloved swing tunes as “Minnie the Moocher” and “Dinah.” Trumpeter Byron Stripling wails through the evening’s pieces, aided by the furious footwork of tap dancer Ted Louis Levy. A featured vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra for nine years, Carmen Bradford lends her brassy voice to such favorites as “I Got Rhythm” and “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing.”

Masterworks: Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde

As the literal translation of its name would imply, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, The Song of the Earth, spans six separate songs, as varied and broad as the planet itself. The first movement challenges the vocalist’s attempts to out-sing the dramatic flourishes of the orchestra, before breaking into a melancholic, ponderous melody. The piece, conceived by Mahler following the death of his eldest daughter, his own diagnosis with a heart defect, and his ouster from the Vienna Court Opera, is a personal exploration of loss, sorrow, and salvation. The orchestra bids “farewell” to the audience with a performance of Haydn’s Symphony no. 45.

Florida Orchestra

Florida Orchestra has delighted ears across the Tampa Bay area for 44 seasons filled with time-tested masterworks and sprightly pops concerts. Created in the 1968 merger between the St. Petersburg Symphony and the Tampa Philharmonic, Florida Orchestra ties the two sides of the bay together into one musical tradition. The ensemble has continued its program of outreach ever since, which has recently included cultural exchange programs with Cuba, collaborations with local institutions, and the tradition of allowing one lucky child to sleep inside a tuba during each performance.
