The Scouting Report
Grizzlies catcher and Gardner-Webb transplant Henry Rundio is off to a flying start in 2013. He sits amongst the Coastal Plain League's leaders in batting average, a stat he improved upon on June 13. In that game, he ripped an eighth-inning RBI single to break a 3-3 tie against Thomasville and propel the Grizzlies to victory. Such clutch performances have become a familiar sign of nearby Grizzlies—as a sixth-seed underdog in 2011, the team won its first-ever CPL championship against the top-seeded Edenton Steamers, allowing them to finally bring the Petitt Cup to Gastonia and fill it with candy for visiting teams. This year, the team continues to swing for a second title while treating fans to quirky promotions such as the fourth-annual "Midnight Madness" game on July 26.
2011 was a big year for the Grizzlies. Not only did they win their first Coastal Plain League championship, but they also earned the league's "Promotion of the Year" award for their "Great Community Give Back Game," which provided free tickets to the entire Gastonia community. Since then, such creative promotions have become the organization's calling card—an ongoing salute to the fans that keep returning to the Sims Park den to see the top college athletes play ball. In past seasons, the team has hosted everything from a "Grandma Beauty Pageant" to a "Salute to Underwear," and every year they play a "Midnight Madness" game, in which the first pitch doesn't get thrown until the stroke of midnight, when a crew of mild-mannered men transform into hideous umpires. For all of their off-the-field antics, though, the Grizzlies certainly take care of business on the diamond, as more than 40 of the club's alumni have been drafted into the big leagues since the team formed in 2002.
