Goodyear Ballpark stirs back to life in late February, marking the dawn of a new season, as the Reds and Indians meet during opening weekend of spring training. A year ago at this time, the Reds found themselves bursting with potential. The team lived up to the hype, too, especially during the regular season, when it won 97 games and its second NL Central title in three years. Though the Reds disappeared last October, they start this new season with arguably the best pitching staff in baseball, making them an early-season World Series contender.

After a second-place finish in the AL Central in 2011, the Indians took a step backward during their 2012 campaign. The offseason saw the Tribe make several splashy acquisitions, including a three-way trade that involved the Reds, which paves the way for the team to be far more competitive in 2013.

Goodyear Ballpark

Located on a three-acre parcel south of Yuma Road, Goodyear Ballpark was officially completed in early 2009. Since then, fans have filled its 8,000 stadium seats and 1,500 lawn seats every February and March wearing two shades of red—some cheering for the Cincinnati Reds, others for the Cleveland Indians, and still others for their favorite Skittle flavor. The spring training home for both organizations, the ballpark sits as the centerpiece of a large collection of facilities, including eight other diamonds used by the city’s residents. Outside the ballpark, visitors are greeted by a fiberglass sculpture called The Ziz, which celebrates Goodyear's aviation history and stands 60'6" high—the exact distance between home plate and the pitcher's mound.
