A family drama, a comic socioeconomic parable of turn-of-the-century Russia, and a sharp stick in the eye of the bourgeoisie, Anton Chekhov’s final play, The Cherry Orchard, is a rich onion that performers and audiences have peeled for more than a century. The plot centers upon the spoiled Madame Ranevskaya and her family of aristocrats, whose privileged way of life is being challenged by the rise of the middle class and serfdom’s demise. On a trip to save their family estate and titular cherry orchard from the auctioning block, the Ranevskayas struggle to maintain their lofty existence as Chekhov’s prose swings from tragic devastation to laugh-out-loud humor.

As with all Grand Canyon University productions, the theater students involve themselves with every aspect of the production, from acting, directing, and lighting to set construction and proper borscht preparation. Ethington Theatre's cozy 311-seat space encourages an immediate connection between the audience and the actors.
