In a Nutshell

Anton Chekhov’s dark comedy blends tragedy and farce in prophetic tale of spoiled Russian aristocrats losing their family estate

The Fine Print

Superstition dictates that instead of wishing actors "good luck," you should tell them to "break a leg" or "stir me with your acting, you beautiful beast." Be moved with this GrouponLive deal to see Grand Canyon University’s production of The Cherry Orchard at Ethington Theatre. For $12, you get two tickets for general admission (a $24 value). Choose from the following performances:

  • Friday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, February 17, at 2 p.m.
  • Friday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 23, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, February 24, at 2 p.m.

A family drama, a comic socioeconomic parable of turn-of-the-century Russia, and a sharp stick in the eye of the bourgeoisie, Anton Chekhov’s final play, The Cherry Orchard, is a rich onion that performers and audiences have peeled for more than a century. The plot centers upon the spoiled Madame Ranevskaya and her family of aristocrats, whose privileged way of life is being challenged by the rise of the middle class and serfdom’s demise. On a trip to save their family estate and titular cherry orchard from the auctioning block, the Ranevskayas struggle to maintain their lofty existence as Chekhov’s prose swings from tragic devastation to laugh-out-loud humor.

As with all Grand Canyon University productions, the theater students involve themselves with every aspect of the production, from acting, directing, and lighting to set construction and proper borscht preparation. Ethington Theatre's cozy 311-seat space encourages an immediate connection between the audience and the actors.

The Groupon Guide to: Famous Haunted Attractions

Many historical landmarks claim to have undead residents, but none are so infamously haunted as these famous destinations:

Winchester Mystery House
Built: 1884–1922
The Ghastly Details: Construction of the maze-like Winchester mansion was overseen by the widow of the Winchester rifle's inventor so that the restless spirits killed by her husband's creation could have a place to crash after their own haunted houses were ordered by the mayor to be blown up with dynamite.

The Ludlow Lighthouse
Built: 1790
The Ghastly Details: Said to have a will of its own, the Ludlow Lighthouse willfully misguided countless ships onto its rocky banks, killing hundreds of seafarers—thus tethering their spirits to the macabre monument and necessitating that it be blown up with dynamite in 1995.

The Carousel of Souls
Built: 1909
The Ghastly Details: After a mule unexpectedly kicked over a kerosene lamp onto a pan of waffle oil, this carousel is the only surviving structure untouched by the Great World's Fair Fire of 1909. Some say that late at night you can still hear laughter, leading experts to recommend that this obviously possessed attraction be safely dynamited later this month.

What are the most haunted locations in America, and what can be done about them? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
