In a Nutshell

Groupon and Nationals Park team up to show St. Elmo's Fire, with photo-ops of movie lookalikes and 1980s dress-up theme

The Fine Print

Movies take audiences where they could not go otherwise, such as the far reaches of outer space or a kitchen with George Clooney in it. See the stars when Groupon Presents Movie Night at Nationals Park on Thursday, November 8. Ballpark gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the evening's movie, St. Elmo's Fire, begins at 7:30 p.m. Free parking is available for the first 1,200 cars in lots B and C located on N Street SE. Choose from the following options:

  • For $15, you get one ticket for an outfield stadium seat.
  • For $30, you get one ticket for field seating.
  • For $38, you get a bar package that includes:
    • One ticket for an outfield stadium seat
    • Beer and wine from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk; discounted food will be available for purchase
  • For $75, you get a VIP package that includes:
    • One ticket for field seating
    • Beer, wine, and food from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Lexus Presidents Club

Groupon will be bringing back the 80s and celebrating Nationals Park’s home team’s incredible baseball season. As soon as the gates open, lookalikes posing as the film's seven main characters stand ready for photo ops. Local hairstylists from Voila Salon and Salon en Color help guests complete their 1980s ensemble with a big-hair makeover. Whichever guests arrive draped in the most convincing 1980s outfit may be rewarded with a Groupon gift card or a madcap weekend of convincing people that their dead boss is still alive. Three 30-foot screens face the outfield from along the infield lip of Nationals Park, broadcasting the coming-of-age romantic comedy about seven friends who have recently graduated from Georgetown University. A cast of recognizable Brat Pack actors—including Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, and Molly Ringwald's bottom lip—find themselves unable to adjust financially and emotionally to the responsibilities of adulthood, which results in seismic changes to their relationships—and their goals in life. Propelled by a quirky script and scrunchy-filled dance scenes, the film earned a Grammy nomination with its hit-heavy soundtrack that features David Foster's Love Theme from St. Elmo's Fire. But audiences more likely will be matching John Parr wail for wail during the easily sung-along-to theme song and aural Successories poster, "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)." St. Elmo's Fire is rated R and may not be appropriate for (or interesting to) young children.

Local cover band The Reflex keeps the neon-lit crowd jumping to hits by Blondie, Bryan Adams, and Duran Duran until the film begins. Throughout the night, the ballpark's concession stands fuel the revelry with hot dogs and beer at prices discounted from game-day rates. Heating stations will dot the field if it's a cold night, but attendees are encouraged to wear their warmest and most exclusive-looking Members Only jackets.

The Groupon Guide to: Washing Your Hands

In this sick, wet world, nothing is more important than washing your hands. Whether you've just used the bathroom or just touched a child's bacteria-laden face, here is what you'll need to do to regain your purity:

  • Turn on the hot-water faucet.
  • Get the soap out of the hermetically sealed safe where you keep it so humidity won't cause it to burst into suds.
  • Once the water is hot enough to kill (and cook) a bug, plug the sink so it fills up.
  • Drop the soap in the full sink to make soapy water, or "clean soup," as it's often called.
  • Submerge your fingers in the water one at a time in order of filthiness. Repeat until your fingers have soaked up all the water, leaving the sink completely dry.
  • If you ever forget what to do, just remember the childhood hand-washing rhyme: "My fingers, my fingers are drinking clean soup/ My heavens, my heavens, it hurts."

What are the ingredients in clean soup?
