The Scouting Report
This spring, the Treasure Valley Roller Girls race into a fresh season that includes six home bouts at CenturyLink Arena. During their opening match on May 4, they face Team Valkyries from California, which kicks off a home schedule packed with opponents from the western United States. As Demolition Barbie, Dawn of the Shred, and the rest of the TVR roster rumble around the track, fans can soak in the mayhem perched on the edge of their general-admission seats, or atop floor seats that are close enough to see W-shaped bruises form on the arms of the winning team.
Treasure Valley Roller Girls
The Treasure Valley Roller Girls planted their flag in the city’s sports scene in February of 2006 to become Boise’s only women’s roller derby league. The skater-owned and operated team played its premier bout a year later, and has been battling rival clubs from across the western United States ever since. Despite its youth, the league has already established traditions, including participating in the annual Spudtown Knockdown Tournament every summer. The league also makes its presence known in the community by volunteering regularly throughout the Treasure Valley, instead of spending their time recounting the details of their victories for neighborhood children.
2013 Chili & Salsa Fest
What makes a chili recipe the best there is? The judges at this year's Chili & Salsa fest will have to figure that out for themselves as they award entries of chili—and salsa—in this year's competitions. At Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park, the scents of fall food mingle in the air, making it tricky for patrons to decide whose wares to sample. And as evening comes on, so does the crowd, as the event shifts to watching college and NFL football on the big screen.
