Raqs Luminaire: The Return to Pandora’s Box embodies themes of illumination and interconnectedness in an electrifying combination of dance, song, and lights. Set in 1926, the story follows Dr. Penny Andora on her quest to find Pandora’s box so that she can seal up the world’s evil and darkness. Played by Madame “Onça," Dr. Andora stumbles upon a magical antique shop where she discovers Pandora, played by acclaimed bellydancer Princess Farhana, and characters including Addiction, Despair, Madness, and others embittered by their parents’ rotten choice of names, all sinuously embodied by belly-dance-trained performers who harness a variety of lights to brighten their gloom.
Producer Khalima and Director Julia Zay, both fascinated by light in the midst of darkness, set their carnival of eerie luminescence inside The Byrd Theatre. The historic space itself boasts a glowing auditorium thanks to massive chandeliers that cast blue, amber, and green lights against red velvet curtains and hand-painted murals.

Studio owner Khalima’s knack for putting others at ease helps her students to drop their inhibitions in favor of fun, sensual choreography. Khalima and her highly trained staff host seminars in several styles, ranging from classic and tribal to improvisational fusion. They showcase their steps on a sprung wood floor, twirling in front of a mirrored wall to better examine their form and check to see if their navels are still fastened. Whether they are hosting a weekly series, a special workshop, or a private party, the teachers preserve a welcoming atmosphere for guests of all ages and abilities.
