Third-year head coach Fran McCaffery helms the men's squad as they seek to whip past the South Dakota defense and solve a geometry problem using the three-point line after each basket. Last season, sophomore forward Aaron White became the first Iowa freshman since 1943 to net 19 points in a season opener, and in early 2011, junior forward Melsahn Basabe became the first Big Ten player in more than 15 years to achieve at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks in a single game.

The interconference showdown takes place in the newly renovated Carver-Hawkeye Arena, one of the largest university-owned facilities in the country.
