  • For $15, you get two one-day tickets for general admission to iBAM! on Sunday, October 14, starting at 11 a.m. (up to a $30 value).

iBAM! gathers a cavalcade of Irish authors, artists, and musicians from around the world for a celebration of Irish culture and heritage. The celebration kicks off on October 11 with Academy Award–nominated actor Stephen Rea opening iBAM!'s James Joyce exhibit, which features materials from the author's life on loan from the Irish government. Rea will read passages from Joyce's works, imbuing the legendary writer's words with the nuanced emotion that has earned Rea acclaim for such movies as The Crying Game and V for Vendetta. "Rattlin' of the Joists"—a confederation of Chicago actors, singers, and artists—will open for Rea, bringing their own twists to performances of Joyce's work.

Throughout the rest of the weekend, Celtic cohorts unleash their knowledge of the Emerald Isle with a lineup of lectures, including "The Influence of James Joyce on Modern Literature," "Historical Fiction vs. History," and "Derry-Londonberry: The New Peace Story," along with engaging literary discussions and poetry readings from authors such as Morgan Llywelyn and Colum McCann. Musical groups bring the appropriate air of festivity to the event, with performances by such artists as John Williams, Laurence Nugent, and Chicago Reel, which is joined by Dailthi Sproule of the Irish group Altan. Glee's Damian McGinty will also be on hand for a Q&A, meet and greet, and autograph signing. For celebration updates, scope the schedules.

Irish American Heritage Center

Occupying a building that sprang up at the turn of the 20th century, the Irish American Heritage Center (IAHC) somehow manages to cram Ireland into one of Chicago’s city blocks. Work from Irish artists hangs in the building’s art gallery, books from Irish authors fill its library, Irish plays light up its 658-seat theater, and Irish food and drinks delight the crowd on the main floor at the Fifth Province Pub. The IAHC also has a knowledgeable staff of instructors, who teach classes on everything from Irish dance and music to Irish language and genealogy.

The Groupon Guide to: Cool Scars

Fall is one of the worst times of the year because wearing a jacket, scarf, and long pants will cover up all of your cool scars. Here are some of the coolest scars you can have:

  • A face scar that has given you a permanent, perfectly symmetrical flesh goatee
  • A scar anywhere on your body that you got from a rich person throwing a wad of money at you
  • A mark on your stomach that resembles your favorite food—a roast turkey—which you got from swallowing one whole and having it pressed up against your stomach for a few weeks
  • A scar that either looks like a cigarette or was caused by a famous person carelessly holding a cigarette
  • Anything caused by a big, fat sword

What's a hairless goatee?
