What You'll Do

U Street was once known as "Black Broadway," a title coined by Pearl Bailey and earned by the corridor's many jazz clubs, restaurants, and people that helped define its African American culture. The mural outside of Ben's Chili Bowl depicts some of these luminaries, making it the perfect meeting place for this walking African American Foodie Tour. From here, Jeffrey Diaz or one of his experienced guides takes you to historical locations and restaurants, where you meet the chefs and sample authentic African dishes, Southern favorites, and soul food.

  • Introductions
After a brief introduction, foodie Jeffrey Diaz or one of his guides goes over the different stops on the tour and addresses any concerns related to food allergies. The tour's samples can be made vegetarian upon request.

  • History and Food Tour
The 1- to 1.25-mile tour alternates between historical locales and and restaurants, with five total stops for food and drink.

  • Chat With Chefs
You meet each restaurant's chef or general manager, ask questions, and sample food and drinks that were prepared ahead of time—no waiting necessary.

  • Parting Gifts
Your host leaves the group with recommendations for additional sites to visit, along with a goodie bag containing treats and menus from restaurants visited during the tour.
