Hailed as "America's Company of Firsts," the world-renowned Joffrey Ballet has been blazing an artistic trail since 1956. The 2012–13 season kicks off with Human Landscapes (October 17–28). This three-act exploration of classic and contemporary works includes an homage to the art form in Pretty BALLET, which was described by the Chicago Tribune as “thrilling, ingeniously designed, devilishly rebellious and brash in its showmanship.” Forgotten Land draws its inspiration from a painting by Edvard Munch of women on a beach, and uses the sea as a metaphor for constant motion and renewal. The wave-like motions could remind the audience of unfurling wings or the opening of DeLorean doors. Finally, Kurt Jooss’ opus The Green Table takes on the cyclical nature of war and the price exacted on its victims, the stage ever haunted by the looming, skeletal visage of Death itself.

American Legends (February 13–24) explores the nation’s songwriters and step directors in four pieces. Sea Shadow—performed in honor of Gerald Arpino, the Joffrey Ballet’s cofounder and former artistic director—is Arpino’s ode to the Ondine fable, depicting the tragic love of a man and a sea nymph. Other works include Interplay, an exuberant piece that takes its playful motions from the energy of children; Nine Sinatra Songs, choreographed by Twyla Tharp, pays homage to The Chairman of the Board’s crooning; and the world premiere of a new work by Stanton Welch, the artistic director of the Houston Ballet.

Finally, Othello (April 24–May 5) rounds out the season with a retelling of the classic Shakespearean play with a score composed by Oscar-winner Elliot B. Goldenthal. A reprise of the 2009 full-length ballet, this run will celebrate the 70th birthday of its choreographer, Lar Lubovitch.
