In a Nutshell

15-piece jazz ensemble led by drummer Tommy Igoe conjures a night at the legendary New York club with pieces from around the world

The Fine Print

Without music, concerts wouldn't exist and funk would just be the smell emanating from an old sock filled with corn. Lend an ear to this GrouponLive deal to see Live at Birdland at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts. For $32, you get two tickets for lower-balcony seating on Thursday, January 31, at 7:30 p.m. (up to a $64 value, including all fees). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Parking in the North Garage is included, see here for parking information.

Although it’s the house band at the legendary New York jazz club that welcomed greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker, the Birdland Big Band doesn’t confine its inspiration to the borders of its hometown. Led by the furious rhythms and propulsive grooves of famed drummer Tommy Igoe, the 15-piece outfit searches out toe-tapping compositions from around the world. On the band’s set lists, tunes from Duke Ellington and Chick Corea mix with works from Broadway musicals, Latin America, and wherever Randy Newman’s from.

The band released its most recent album, Eleven, to critical acclaim in late 2011, but it’s onstage that the musicians’ intense energy is most apparent as furrowed brows compete with gleeful grins. As the Wall Street Journal recently wrote, “No matter what the time signature or the rhythmic mode, nearly everything the Birdland Big Band plays is loud, fast and exciting.”

The Groupon Guide to: Making a Goofy Face

If we each spend just 15 minutes a day making a goofy face in public, this big old bowl of soup we call "Earth" won't seem quite as tasteless. Here are some tips on how to goof up your face:

  • To make a goofy smile, simply angle the corners of your lips down instead of up.

  • Stick your open hands behind your head so you look like you're either a moose or a person whose head is growing 10 fleshy nubs.

  • Turn around before making a face. That way the person you're with won't have to watch you try to fold your eyelids in half several times, if that's how you choose to make your goofy face.

  • Puff up your cheeks. You can do this the traditional way—with your breath—or the delicious way—with a pound of meatloaf.

  • For the "inverse," you'll want to shave off your head hair and glue the clippings onto your face. You'll also probably want to start walking backward and draw two eyes, a nose, and a mouth on the hairless portion of your head with lipstick. Have a friend do it too and then your inverse faces can kiss each other. That's wild!

Would the world be a better place if everyone walked around with a mouthful of meatloaf?
