What You'll Do
Though the words inside them might be their raison d'être, books themselves can often be objects of detailed craftsmanship and exquisite art. Professional bookbinder and conservator Juliayn Coleman shows you what it takes to make a beautiful volume with your own two hands. After acquainting yourself with the basic tools, you'll delve into four unique binding methods, making a small, blank book with each that you can take home.

Under Coleman's expert tutelage, you'll make one book in each of the following styles: accordion, pamphlet stitch, tunnel book, and Chinese four-hole stab
It took Juliayn Coleman a little while to find her calling. Early on, her passion for working with her hands led to a career as a baker. Then her love of books transformed into a career as a librarian. Luckily, Juliayn found a field that combines both of her passions: hand bookbinding. Armed with a diploma from the prestigious bookbinding program at Boston's North Bennet Street School, Juliayn's work has appeared at the Boston Architectural Center, Columbia College, and the Chicago Public Library.
