"From the day Talib Kweli made his studio debut with Mos Def on 1998′s Black Star, he’s been the uncontested king of underground hip-hop." These words began Consequence of Sound's review of Kweli's last album, Gutter Rainbows, and it's hard to argue with the sentiment. Since his legendary stint with the aforementioned duo, Kweli has produced a discography recognized as being both socially conscious and commercially viable, all while retaining an edge of street credibility. Live, he eschews the legion of hype men and sweat-suited mannequins typically seen in hip-hop performances, instead entertaining audiences with nothing more than his DJ and his voice as he blazes through verbally dexterous cuts such as "Get By." A sped up sample of Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" ebbs and flows as he spits lyrical gems throughout the song. "Ask him why some people got to live in a trailer, cuss like a sailor. I paint a picture with the pen like Norman Mailer."

Joining Kweli at the sleek Mediterranean lounge’s shindig is comic performance artist Jerry LaVigne, Jr. As well, DJ Mika and DJ C2, both record spinners from Japan, augment the evening’s soundtrack with hip-shaking beats. Meanwhile, concertgoers refuel with refreshments that include Izze sodas, Chobani greek yogurt, and Popchips. The entire evening celebrates the release of The Power of Interdependence, a book by Nigerian author and economist David Oladipupo Kuranga on power shifts within Africa today.

Katra

Katra steeps revelers in a sleek ambiance inspired by its mantra of “Cocktails. Cuisine. Culture.” Moroccan influences drift from the menu of small dishes—including lamb tagines and merguez sausage—throughout the restaurant, from clutches of delicate tasseled lanterns to banquettes strewn with tiny pillows perfect for five-minute naps between entree and dessert. Cocktails made with Pama pomegranate liqueur and tropical fruits such as lychee and guava flow throughout both levels of the restaurant, from the cozy cabanas upstairs to the lower floor’s DJ booth and couches.
