The Plot

Adapted from the 2005 film of the same name (itself based on a true story), Kinky Boots centers its story on Charlie Price, who has never liked shoes all that much and inherits his father’s shoe factory with a sense of resignation. The failing business has forced him to lay off many of his employees, including the beautiful and vivacious Lauren, but he still can’t bring himself to abandon what has been in the family for generations. When Charlie serendipitously strikes up a friendship with Lola—an upfront and fearless drag queen fed up with the flimsy heels of women’s footwear—he builds his new ally a pair of glossy boots from the sole up and realizes he has stumbled on an oft-forgotten but ravenously shoe-hungry market. Rehiring Lauren and recruiting Lola to the cause, Charlie aims to reinvigorate the family business—even if that means donning a pair of kinky boots himself.

The Players

Some of the biggest names in Broadway and pop culture form the creative team of this wacky yet heartfelt production. Scribed by ardent suffragette of gender-specific fun Cyndi Lauper and the legendary Broadway storyteller Harvey Fierstein, the score seamlessly shifts from classically orchestrated showstoppers to disco-flavored anthems to pop tunes that, in the words of star Billy Porter, “sound like something that could be on the radio today.” Rounding out the star-studded ranks of the behind-the-curtain team is director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, whose fancy footwork has earned seven Tony nominations, along with two wins.

Kinky Boots assembles a cast of familiar faces with diverse theater and television resumés to embody its eclectic characters. Stark Sands, a Tony Award nominee for his role in Journey’s End, endears himself to audiences as he wears the shoes of main character Charlie Price, and Annaleigh Ashford calls upon her screen time in the television series Legally Blonde to shine in the role of Lauren. No stranger to the Broadway stage, former Grease star Billy Porter channels all things glamorous as he takes on the role of the lovable drag queen Lola.

Bank of America Theatre

Whether you’re walking to or from Millennium Park, it’s difficult to miss Bank of America Theatre’s golden marquee, giant posters of upcoming shows, and the incandescent meteor impacted into its cornice. Built in 1906 by Broadway’s first benefactors, the Shubert brothers, the theater glitters from floor to ceiling with its crimson, gold-trimmed curtain and ornate, amber-colored rafters.

The Groupon Guide to: Cool Scars

Fall is one of the worst times of the year because wearing a jacket, scarf, and long pants will cover up all of your cool scars. Here are some of the coolest scars you can have:

  • A face scar that has given you a permanent, perfectly symmetrical flesh goatee
  • A scar anywhere on your body that you got from a rich person throwing a wad of money at you
  • A mark on your stomach that resembles your favorite food—a roast turkey—which you got from swallowing one whole and having it pressed up against your stomach for a few weeks
  • A scar that either looks like a cigarette or was caused by a famous person carelessly holding a cigarette
  • Anything caused by a big, fat sword

What's a hairless goatee?
