Between the grunts of skaters, yells of fans, and exclamations of announcers, the din at the Doll Factory can be thunderous. But this lively noise is a fitting match for the energy of the L.A. Derby Dolls, who zip around their track at breakneck speeds. In the past decade, the ferocious, unscripted maneuvers of this roller derby league have made waves, landing four of the skaters in Aerosmith’s new music video, attracting media buzz, and drawing crowds to the edges of their seats during every bout. During the two-hour faceoffs, the Derby Dolls block and jam each other in four 15-minute periods, which are split by an intermission with live entertainment.

On September 8, the league’s two top teams will rumble at the track—the police-themed Sirens are set to battle against the collegiate Varsity Brawlers for derby dominance. After the doors open at 6 p.m., a video at 7:30 will explain the rules, which do not allow the throwing of grenades, and at 7:45, the skaters will be introduced. Audience members can cheer on the Sirens’ top jammers, Mourning Wood and The Jeneral, who boast a 5.261 and 4.913 average points per jam, respectively, or the Varsity Brawlers’ P’Leia, who has racked up an average of 4.5 points per jam. The game might get too heated for children 13 and younger as the Sirens’ blockers—which fill nine of the league’s top 10 spots—show off their moves. Attendees should bring cash for acquiring concessions, drinks, and apparel at the Vendor Village.

Each attendee will receive a .08-ounce apricot lip glaze from Stila, which supports the LA Derby Dolls and often hands out complimentary cosmetics at their bouts. Stila focuses on creating fashion-forward colors for makeup wrapped in eco-friendly packaging, and the brand often graces the pages of magazines such as Allure and InStyle.

The Doll Factory

Reflecting their zeal and do-it-yourself confidence, the LA. Derby Dolls zip around a 100’x60’ banked oval track that they built themselves with the help of friends and family members. The track’s customized slope and elevation enables them to hit breakneck paces normally reserved for cheetahs that can afford their own cleats. Bout attendees can wander over to the factory’s Vendor Village for apparel and jewelry, food from the likes of Garage Pizza and Hot Dog on a Stick, and brews from PBR and Schiltz. Alex’s Bar also serves Jack Daniel’s ready-to-drink bottles.

Although fans keep the air moving, the Doll Factory doesn’t have air conditioning or heating, so audience members should dress according to the season. Bout attendees can park their cars for $10 at Silver Lake Medical Center or their motorcycles and scooters for $5 at the Westlake entrance.

Recognizing the opportunities that having such an large track gives them, the Derby Dolls have expanded their community involvement by offering the venue for events such as the TwentyWonder fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles.
