A great vocalist's art springs directly from the body, much like a bird's flight or an armadillo’s uncanny impersonation of a roly-poly. The Knoxville Opera enthralls and educates audiences with locally produced, classic opera. Russian soprano Julia Lima joins the company for Johann Strauss II's sprightly tale of 19th century Austrian intrigue in Die Fledermaus. which is German for "the bat." Following the jail-dodging machinations of protagonist Eisenstein, the misfortunes of his unfaithful wife's lover, and an elaborate revenge plot set at a lavish masquerade ball, the fast-moving story keeps audiences enthralled with mistaken identities, amorous escapades, and rollicking music. The show will be performed in English, eliminating the need for an interpreter or an emergency trip to Europe. An opera preview by the company's director and maestro Brian Salesky begins 45 minutes before each show, priming audiences for the performance with an overview of the plot and sneak peek at the music.

Though the Knoxville Opera sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

Knoxville Opera

The Knoxville Opera sings most of its notes in a venue befitting the regality of its material: the Tennessee Theatre. The former movie-house and decades-old stage swathes performers in Spanish-Moorish design, a strikingly blue domed ceiling, burgundy velvet seats, and gold accents. But the opera singers don't keep their voices contained there. Education and outreach programs send them throughout the community, performing at schools, shaking the downtown streets during themed festivals, and aiding local construction companies by shattering old glass buildings.
