In a Nutshell

Half a century of tradition backs a choral Christmas tree that sings carols while a heartwarming holiday production unfolds on stage

The Fine Print

Find the perfect gift with this GrouponLive deal to see The Singing Christmas Tree: A Golden Christmas at Life Center Church in Tacoma. For $9, you get two tickets for seating in the red portion of the side section (up to an $18 value). Doors open 30 minutes before each show. Choose from the following performances:

  • Saturday, December 8, at 7 p.m.
  • Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 15, at 7 p.m.
  • Friday, December 21, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 22, at 7 p.m.

For their 50th annual celebration, The Singing Christmas Tree’s carolers, dancers, musicians, performers, set designers, and workshop elves pull out all the stops with a light-studded set and heartwarming original story. Nearly 100,000 tiny bulbs twinkle on a tiered choir stand shaped as a traditional fir bristling with dulcet-toned branches that sings classic carols such as “O Holy Night,” “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” While the voices warm heart-cockles with the help of a full orchestra, a troupe of actors and actresses performs a holiday drama that stretches from a modern-day neighborhood all the way back to the very first Nativity.

A Tacoma tradition since its first production in 1963, The Singing Christmas Tree at Life Center Church has evolved from a relatively simple conical choir dressed in red and white to an extravagantly colorful affair decked in thousands of lights. Embodying festive joy and the nearly universal desire to be covered in pine needles, the show changes and grows every year.

The Groupon Guide to: Preserving Leftovers

With the right techniques and a lot of luck, there's no reason that this year's holiday leftovers won't be edible next year. Here's how you can keep your scraps fresh:

  • Store food in airtight containers. To make sure there's no leak, add in a bunch of ants and see if they can survive.

  • Before storing the food, cut off any pieces that have clearly been chewed. If you don't, and the person that chewed that food isn't around for the next Thanksgiving, you'll be feeling pretty sad when you pull those leftovers out and recognize their bite pattern.

  • The freezer is your best friend, in that it will prevent food from spoiling, and your worst enemy, in that it is so perfectly sized to fit a human body and has that alluring pristinely white interior, and whenever you open the door it sounds like it's saying, "Please come inside. I'm warmer than I look." Please be careful near freezers.

  • Save your leftovers the same way our forefathers did—by feeding the scraps to their horses then hoping the horses would give them back exactly one year later.

If you think those mashed potatoes are good now, wait till you try them in a year!
