In a Nutshell

Pyrotechnics, lasers, and lights punctuate the debut live performance of the multiplatinum prog-rock opera The Lost Christmas Eve

The Fine Print

Going to a concert is the only way to listen to music in public without having to put your mouth around a discman to catch its sound vibrations. Enjoy easier listening with this GrouponLive deal to see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra perform The Lost Christmas Eve at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. For $37, you get one G-Pass for seating in rows 1–28 of sections 117–120 on Friday, December 14, at 4 p.m. (up to a $74.50 value, including all fees). Doors open at 3 p.m. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call.

Recognized by Billboard as one of the top 25 touring artists of the 2000s, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra explodes onto the stage with a juggernaut of progressive rock and metal infused with symphonic instrumentation and themes. Surrounded by a spectacle of lasers and pyrotechnics, the band's 2012 winter tour covers the entirety of its Christmas Trilogy conclusion, The Lost Christmas Eve. Originally conceived as a singular rock opera meant to be played without interruption, buffering, or donut breaks, the grandiose high-concept record tells a labyrinthine tale of lives intertwining with a young angel on a mystical quest in New York City.

The show opens with the tinkling jaunt of “Faith Noel,” where a lonesome piano dances in a circle of fifths before the thunderous arrival of drums and hammer-on guitar solos roars in like an eagle uncaged. In the title track, stark vocals set up the narrative, introducing audiences to the shivering denizens of a rundown hotel—set within a musical landscape that begins with menacing melancholy before rolling to a full heavy-metal boil. Among the original numbers, only a few tip their hats to holiday standards. “Queen of the Winter Night” reimagines Mozart’s The Magic Flute as if were performed by Brian May and Queen, whereas “Christmas Canon Rock” envisions Pachelbel writing Canon in D.

As the storyline races between a blues bar, a gothic cathedral, and an old toy store, the orchestra explodes with ruthless energy. Violinists bow like they’re sawing through a tank, pianists pummel banks of black-and-white keyboards until they’re black and blue, choirs and dancers sway as flames blast from the stage, and the guitarists high-kick and shred in harmony. Gorgeous vocal numbers such as “For the Sake of Our Brother” and “Different Wings” keep chestnuts warm as the story comes to its touching conclusion. After the acoustic sweep of the album closer, “Midnight Clear,” fans can expect a handful of brand-new Trans-Siberian tunes, along with favorites from Part One of their trilogy, Christmas Eve and Other Stories. During bonus cuts such as these, fog will roll off the stage, prismatic displays of light will flash, and lasers will disintegrate any camera-phone bootleggers in the crowd.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.

The Groupon Guide to: Bold Choices

Einstein once said, "A life half-lived will only experience a half-life," an inspirational quote inspired by his bold addiction to radioactive isotopes. What are some bold choices that could transform your life?

  • Try adding some hot sauce to your food instead of just plain old sauce.
  • Play hooky, or its equally dangerous cousin, hockey.
  • Stand up to your neighborhood bully. If he kills you, the joke’s on him—murder is still illegal in your state!
  • If your name is Ben Kobold, change your name to Ben So-bold.
  • Quit your day job! This will free up time for you to pursue your real dreams: steady employment and financial security.

What are some bold choices that could transform your entire life?
