"Evolution" Concert Series

Magos Herrera and Celso Duarte perform “La Llorona

Mozart created groundbreaking work that nevertheless reflected the culture and society in which he lived. In the same way, "Evolution" takes a grounded and celebratory look at that which moves us forward. The artists featured in "Evolution" are currently pushing boundaries all around the globe.

Thursday, June 6: Mexico’s Next Wave of Classics and Jazz
Vocalist Magos Herrera, violinist Cuauhtémoc Rivera, and harpist Celso Duarte among others, explore evocative works from early-20th-century Mexican composers. Dubbed “the Cassandra Wilson of Latin American” by JazzTimes, Herrera also turns her velvet pipes to tracks from her latest album of jazz and blues, Mexico Azul. Another section of the program engineers a striking contrast within a single genre, pairing dances by Bach with those from Aztec and Mayan culture.

Wednesday, June 12: Jazz by Classics
Pianist Stephen Prutsman, the Project Trio, and the Hausmann String Quartet push the boundaries of their instruments: a flute may evoke a beatbox, or a cello sound as though it’s trying to sneak into a funk band disguised as a curvaceous, long-necked backup singer. The musicians also give Prutsman's Jazz Piano Etudes a rousing San Diego debut.

Wednesday, June 19: World Dances and Musical Movements
A quartet from young classical collective The Declassified perform pieces by contemporary composers such as John Adams, Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, and Andrew Norman. They also accompany the airborne voice of Becca Stevens as she unleashes her own genre-bucking songs.
