The Manhattan Transfer

The Manhattan Transfer – “Sassy” (Live in 2009)

Forty years is a long time for a group to keep performing the way they did when they hit it big—fortunately for The Manhattan Transfer, they don’t have to. The vocal quartet's four-decade run has seen them endlessly experiment in genres and styles, dabbling in jazz, pop, R&B, and doo-wop. Active in its current form since 1972, albeit with the swapping in of Cheryl Bentyne in 1978 and plenty of haircuts since then, the group has released 23 albums and garnered 10 Grammy Awards, including one for their 1980 Weather Report cover, "Birdland." Their most recent endeavor, 2009's The Chick Corea Songbook, has earned plenty of praise, including high marks from [Jazz Times](http://gr.pn/1041TJu), which described it as “less an album than a series of soul-stirring journeys.” Expect to wander through some of its tracks such as "500 Miles High" alongside standbys such as Nat King Cole’s “Route 66” and Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie."
