The Manhattan Transfer
The Manhattan Transfer performing “Sassy” in 2009
Forty years is a long time for a group to keep performing the way they did when they hit it big—fortunately for The Manhattan Transfer, they don’t have to. The vocal quartet's four-decade run has seen them endlessly experiment in genres and styles, dabbling in jazz, pop, R&B, and doo-wop. Active in its current form since 1972, albeit with the swapping in of Cheryl Bentyne in 1978 and plenty of haircuts since then, the group has released 23 albums and garnered 10 Grammy Awards, including one for their 1980 Weather Report cover, "Birdland." Their most recent endeavor, 2009's The Chick Corea Songbook, has earned plenty of praise, including high marks from [Jazz Times](http://gr.pn/1041TJu), which described it as “less an album than a series of soul-stirring journeys.” Expect to wander through some of its tracks such as "500 Miles High" alongside standbys such as Nat King Cole’s “Route 66” and Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie." ####Crest Theatre "Ornate" and "sweeping" only begin to describe the Crest Theatre, whose rich [history](http://www.thecrest.com/history/index.cfm) extends back to 1912, when it was opened as a vaudeville house. Within its gargantuan auditorium, plush seats perch in subtly curved rows while elaborate lights and a sea-blue ceiling wash the space in ethereal hues. Moviegoers settle into the elegant confines to take in both new and classic films, reading the subtitles in a whisper to stuffed animals that forgot their glasses. Out in the lobby, a richly patterned carpet and bronzed floral motif cover the sprawling space as visitors belly up to the bar and snack on high-quality goodies.
