The Plot

Combining three of the famous picture-book series' most popular stories, The Berenstain Bears LIVE! in Family Matters: The Musical weaves together a trifecta of plot lines that stress the importance of being honest with one's family. After the doctor tells the family members they need to cut back on junk food, Papa Bear still goes on a secretive binge and eats fatty snacks from his toolbox stash; Brother Bear's distractedness about losing a soccer record leads him to fail a quiz, which he tries to hide from his parents; and Sister Bear sneaks a frog into the house after overreacting to a lecture about the dangers of the outside world. Praised by Time Out New York Kids as "spirited" and "perfectly paced," the show seamlessly integrates catchy songs and lighthearted dances that keep young eyes engaged and robokids' motion-activated eyes turned on.

The Sights

Scenic designer Luke Hegel-Cantarella created a home for the bears that captures the essence of the Berenstains' iconic, cheerful illustrations. Bunk beds, kitchen counters, and whimsical trees have a hand-drawn feel, as though the pages of a well-worn softcover book leaped from the page. Furry bear feet peek out from beneath the hems of the brightly colored costumes, helping the human actors to portray their honey-loving counterparts, and a bear-sized depiction of the family's home-in-a-tree stands at center stage. Very Important Bear–holding patrons view the scenery from the Grassy Knoll at the front of the theater, kicking back in folding chairs or nestling into soft green-shag carpeting.

Source Material

Created by Stan and Jan Berenstain and originally edited and published by Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), the Berenstain Bears series celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012, with more than 250 million copies sold. More than 200 books followed the first story, each describing a new adventure for Papa Bear, Mama Bear, Brother Bear, and Sister Bear—as well as little sister Honey, who made her first appearance in 2000. The series continues to be written and illustrated by Mike Berenstain, Stan and Jan's youngest son, and has inspired holiday television specials, Saturday-morning cartoons, and a PBS series.
