The Scouting Report
In a July 20 victory over the Gastonia Grizzlies, the Mustangs offense left no doubt about its potential. The team had already jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning when outfielder Heath Burton stepped to the plate for the second time in the inning. On a full count with the bases loaded, Burton bashed a grand slam to give his team an 8-0 advantage, all but sealing a Mustangs win and his exclusion from the Grizzlies' post-game pizza party. As the 2013 regular season winds down, Burton and the Mustangs look to ride that momentum to a strong finish through their final five home games, which also feature special promotions, including a fireworks show on August 2.
The Mustangs first slid into the Coastal Plain League in 2005. Ever since, collegiate ballplayers from around the country have spent their summers in Martinsville, honing their skills while away from the classrooms where their gloves and bats are considered a distraction. The league itself has acted as a launch pad to the pros—more than 1,000 CPL alumni have been drafted by big league clubs. Season after season, the Mustangs aim to add to that number by showcasing up-and-comers at Hooker Field, a multi-purpose facility also used for high school and American Legion games. There, fans can enjoy frequent promotions during Mustangs games, including fireworks shows and discounted beer nights.
