In a Nutshell

Accomplished jazz trio inspires holiday spirit with Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts Christmas songs arranged into a 1940s-style radio play

The Fine Print

Seeing music live is a great way to really feel the music, especially when you position yourself directly between the cymbals. Be at the center of it all with this GrouponLive deal to see "It’s a Jazzy Christmas!" at the Massry Center for the Arts. For $12, you get one ticket for best-available seating to a show on Sunday, December 2 (up to a $22.50 value, including all fees). Doors open 30 minutes before each performance. Choose between shows at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Student tickets are $10. Children 5 and younger are admitted free, although they still need a ticket. Contact Massry Center for the Arts for more information.

The Peanut Gallery Jazz Trio, an accomplished group of jazz artists, kindles the Christmas spirit during a concert that features music from Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts holiday specials set to a storyline inspired by 1940s radio shows. After an upsetting news flash informs the audience that the Christmas spirit has been lost, musicians try to save the day by playing favorite carols, such as "O Tannenbaum." Noted for nimble piano keystrokes, fresh arrangements of classics, and the unusual use of live roosters instead of trumpets, Guaraldi's catalog evokes the simple nostalgia of Christmases past. Jazz notes reverberate throughout the 400-seat Kathleen McManus Picotte Recital Hall, which traps the outgoing giggles of a tickled Steinway piano with Peter D'Antonio-designed acoustic panels and 380-pound doors. A reception between performances at 4:15 p.m. punctuates new memories for children and stirs up old memories in adult children with milk and cookies.

The Massry Center for the Arts

Named for the Massry family, whose contributions to The College of Saint Rose helped propel the construction of the arts emporium, the Massry Center for the Arts furthers community appreciation for the arts through performances and events. Music-education classrooms and rehearsal rooms beckon fledgling performers to further their sonic craft, whereas a gallery and a recital hall allow artists to showcase their paintings or beat-boxed readings of the Constitution. The entire environmentally friendly center adheres to green standards, with a geothermal system for heating and cooling, wind-powered electricity, and hardwood floors made of American cherry wood culled from tree farms.

The Groupon Guide to: Basketball Plays

Though it might seem like basketball players are just running around to maintain enough sweat to look beautiful on television, they are actually running complex offensive plays. Here are some simple plays that you can try out next time you hit the hardtop:

Dribble Drive: Each offensive player grabs a basketball and dribbles to the hoop. The one who dribbles fastest wins the points.

Pick and Roll: One of the players "picks" which teammate he believes will be the one to shoot the ball. If he is correct, the player that took the shot has to call a timeout so he can immediately get his reward—a "roll" filled with ham and creamed corn.

Backdoor Cut: This is considered the trickiest play in basketball because it requires the offensive team to distract the defense by having their coach put on a top hat, wander onto the court, and ask the defensive players if they'd like to see what his head looks like without a top hat. If the defensive players ignore the coach's distraction, the offensive players should blow on the defenders' eyes until the dryness becomes unbearable.

Which basketball player was voted most beautiful?
