Michael Franti & Spearhead

Michael Franti performing "I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like)" with the PS22 elementary school chorus

Singer, poet, and guitarist Michael Franti is known for pushing boundaries. His early music—first with The Beatnigs, then with The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy—experimented with abrasive jazz, industrial, and spoken word. Since 1994, however, he's channeled his heightened social consciousness into a sunnier, more accessible style with Spearhead. In collaboration with child prodigy bassist Carl Young and Nigerian-trained drummer Manas Itiene, Franti conducts a peace train that rolls on deep grooves of reggae, rap, folk, and soul. The band's last album, 2011's The Sound of Sunshine, has global inspiration built into its DNA: many of the acoustic-based tracks were variously written in Bali and recorded in Jamaica—influences that carry over to Spearhead's onstage instrumentation. This year's tour celebrates their latest album, All People, which sees Franti and co. expanding their sunshine sound in an effort to turn all the world's trolls to stone. Standout single "I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like) induces widespread shimmying with infectious whistling and dancehall percussion.
