Modesto Symphony Orchestra fills ears with an evening of Baroque masterpieces, beginning with selections from Luigi Boccherini's La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid. Written by the Italian composer while employed in the Spanish royal court, the piece recreates the night sounds of the kingdom's capital, with movements evoking beggars’ pleas, drunken songs, and the military march of the night watch. Next, Henry Purcell's melancholy Chacony in G minor immerses audiences in a kaleidoscope of musical invention, with shifting takes on a haunting violin melody carried by soloist Adé Williams—winner of the 2012 junior division of the Sphinx Competition at age 14. Then, a performance of Pachelbel's Canon imparts a new appreciation of the wedding staple. A simple melody begins, repeated exactly by two following voices to create ever more intricate and sweeping sounds as the notes layer over one another and a rotating bass line.
A one-two punch by Venetian mastermind Antonio Vivaldi closes out the evening, starting with his Concerto for Two Violins and Cello in D Minor. The Four Seasons wraps up the program, showing off the variety of Vivaldi's compositional skills. Composed of four violin concertos, the piece captures the familiar sounds and emotions of the seasons. The melodic evocations of nature include spring's twittering birds, summer's clamorous thunderstorms, and winter's dismayed murmurs of Australian tourists who forgot that seasons are reversed in the north.
