Many comedians honed their talents at a young age by goofing around in class, playing practical jokes on siblings, and learning knock-knock jokes while working as door-to-door salespeople. Tempe Improv’s center stage hosts a cavalcade of troupes and legendary comedians, each presented in front of brick and a sign that proclaims “IMPROV,” like a glowing command from the comedy demigods. Headliner Monique Marvez, one of the stars of The Original Latin Divas of Comedy, owns the stage as she sardonically skewers the gender divide, commenting on how differently men and women handle their friends and the tribulations of married life.
Armed with tickets for future shows, pairs can double up to see renowned comic and Saturday Night Live alum Kevin Nealon on May 12. Alternatively, one person or two people within a single horse costume can see Nealon and the co-host of The Mo’Nique Show, Rodney Perry, or one of dozens more laugh masters on the calendar.
Tempe Improv’s stage has hosted comedy masters such as Tommy Chong, Kids in the Hall’s Dave Foley, and the dulcet-voiced Gilbert Gottfried. Before and during the show, guests pull eats from the dinner menu, where grilled baby back ribs doused in barbecue sauce sidle up alongside penne pasta alfredo garnished with basil and shredded parmesan.
