In a Nutshell

Puppeteers bring to life award-winning bedtime stories during children-friendly puppet show

The Fine Print

The best children's shows place a high premium on audience interaction, unlike the opera or traffic court. Rustle up some kid-friendly fun with this GrouponLive deal to see Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s Guess How Much I Love You and I Love My Little Storybook at Music Hall Center. For $30, you get general admission for two adults and two children on Sunday, January 13, at 4 p.m. (up to an $81 value, including all fees). Doors open at 3 p.m.

Under the tutelage of director and designer Jim Morrow, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s puppeteers combine two award-winning bedtime stories to create a live puppet show enjoyable for all ages. During Guess How Much I Love You, two rabbits attempt to demonstrate their love for one another by hopping as high as they can, stretching their arms as wide as possible, and gnawing sweet nothings onto carrots. In I Love My Little Storybook, the second part of the production, a bunny’s imagination comes to life as he flips through a book and discovers the joy of reading.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia

Since 1972, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has brought its puppets and imaginative adaptations of children’s literature to 48 states, Canada’s 10 provinces, the Northwest Territories, and more than a dozen different countries. But despite their traveling, they keep their local roots strong through the Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre, a home base that houses a 400-seat auditorium and 60-seat second stage for performances, as well as a gallery with work from local artists.

During each play, a skilled team of puppeteers brings to life the characters of award-winning bedtime stories such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Goodnight Moon. Children and educators alike can learn how to manipulate puppets and force them to do chores through the Mermaid Institute of Puppetry Arts, which hosts workshops and demonstrations onsite and at schools.

Music Hall Center

Built in 1928, Music Hall Center dazzles patrons with an ornate art-deco façade and lush Spanish Renaissance interior. Elegant columns, glittering chandeliers, and vibrant geometric patterns create a palatial atmosphere in the lobby. The auditorium's intimately arranged velvet seats leave every viewer within 70 feet of the stage, eliminating the need for binoculars or drawn-out games of telephone describing the onstage action.

The Groupon Guide to: Still-Life Painting

Still-life paintings are the easiest kind to do because everything you’re painting is already dead, thus holding still. Try out these subjects for your next still life:

  • A skull being used as a vase
  • A bunch of mangoes in a bowl but one of them is purple
  • Two teakettles. They don’t have faces, but do they somehow seem to be … talking to each other?
  • Onions
  • The bust of an ancient emperor sitting on a little girl’s nightstand
  • A wooden table strewn with a bunch of dead quail
  • A harpsichord gathering dust in a corner while a shiny electric guitar sits, well cared for, in a stand
  • A man’s hat, pipe, and book all sit on his chair, which has the imprint of his body, but there is no sign of the man.
  • A bunch of absurdly wet fruit

What can you do with a bunch of absurdly wet fruit?
