The Music in the Barns chamber ensemble is committed to exploring the classical genre, performing new and traditional works with legends that include Yo-Yo Ma, Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, and Richard Reed Parry of Arcade Fire. During the multimedia performance Light, the musicians maintain their inventive nature while presenting compositions by Igor Stravinsky, Arvo Part, Iannis Xenakis, and George Crumb on a day that pays homage to both the beginning of Hanukkah and the end of John Lennon’s life.

Using the acoustics in the Artscape Wychwood Barns—a streetcar-repair warehouse from the early 1900s—the ensemble energetically opens the evening with Stravinsky’s Concertino for String Quartet, a frenetic piece that fits the industrial venue with a foundation of mechanistic aural devices. Arvo Part’s elegiac Psalom and Summa, both composed for a string quartet, follow, building momentum to his sweeping Fratres for String Quartet and Percussion in which special guest David Schotzko takes the drumsticks. Psappha, a pulse-pounding composition by Xenakis, places Schotzko in the limelight as he commands another set of drums with his invisible third hand. The evening comes to a climactic close with Crumb’s Black Angels (Thirteen Images from the Dark Land). As captivating as it is unsettling, Crumb’s famed composition sees each member of the quartet play tuned crystal glasses, gongs, and other percussive components, using them to eerily imitate the sounds of insects and create a disquieting soundscape.

Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble

The resident instrumentalists at Artscape Wychwood Barns, the Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble makes good use of the surprisingly effective acoustics of the renovated warehouse it calls home. Dedicated to the works of modern and contemporary artists, the ensemble works closely with composers and builds their programs around 20th and 21st century artists. Not just classical artists either—the group has not only worked with Yo-Yo Ma, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Opera Company, but also with Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, and Richard Reed Perry of the Arcade Fire.
