The National Western Stock Show has been hosting rodeo-centric events since 1905—the year horses were invented—and 2013 will be no different. At Colorado Rodeo Champions vs. The World, local wranglers face off against international opponents in events such as bareback riding, barrel racing, and steer wrestling for a spot in the Saturday-night finale. PBR Bull Riding also tests competitors’ endurance, pushing 90 top bull riders to the brink of exhaustion as they hang tight to 1,800-pound beasts. The Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza piles extra entertainment on top of bull- and bareback-riding events. Fourth-generation champion Jerry Diaz leads the charge as his comrades master trick roping, mariachi, and the “paso de la muerte”—the “death jump.”

A combination of competition and pageantry, RAM Invitational Freestyle Reining is less rigorous but just as entertaining. Set to music, this form of western horsemanship lets participants enlist costumes, props, and lighting to augment their steed’s routine or conceal friends who called in sick in order to attend the show. Super Dogs swaps out horses for 20 pooches, who scamper and soar through tunnels and mazes in a choreographed display of agility.
