Singin' in the Rain
Based on the beloved 1952 film—recently named the greatest movie musical of all time by the American Film Institute—Singin' in the Rain transports audiences to 1920s Hollywood in a lighthearted, song-filled romp. Silent-movie star Don Lockwood has to adapt to the new age of the "talkies" while rebuffing the advances of his detested leading lady, Lina. Comic complications ensue when Don falls for Kathy, an angel-voiced chorus girl who just might provide the perfect cover for Lina’s decidedly silent-film-worthy singing.
New Bedford Festival Theatre's production stays faithful to the charming source material, staging every witty comeback and galoshes-clad dance step. The show reaches its exuberant peak during the titular number, during which an onstage rainstorm inspires joyous choreography that masks the fact that the raindrops are tears shed by stagehands clinging to the rafters.
New Bedford Festival Theatre
New Bedford Festival Theatre is devoted to musicals. Since 1990, they have entertained over 200,000 audience members with Broadway-style shows that span the genre's past and present. Staples such as Cats and The Producers balance lesser-known works such as La Cage aux Folles and The Producers 2: Playbill of Revenge to enrich the cultural knowledge of the public. And their efforts have not gone in vain. The New England Theatre Conference awarded New Bedford Festival Theatre the Moss Hart Award for its performances of Les Misérables and Hairspray.
