Metaphors for laughter are often surprisingly violent, from busting a gut to splitting your sides to tumbling down the jagged face of Joke Mountain. Break a funny bone with this GrouponLive deal to see Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge, presented by New City Stage Company at The Adrienne Theatre. For $29, you get two adult general-admission tickets to any performance (up to a $58 value). The show runs December 2–23. Performances take place at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19.
Playwright Christopher Durang’s version of Mrs. Cratchit pays little resemblance to her A Christmas Carol alter ego. Mrs. Bob Cratchit's Wild Christmas Binge depicts the normally warmhearted matriarch as a modern-day American woman who is sick of her 21 urchin children and is desperate to get out of Dickensian London. In this dark send-up with a cast of familiar characters, Scrooge’s expected trajectory of redemption is thwarted when he arrives at the Cratchit home too early, finding Mrs. Cratchit as she proclaims her wish to get drunk and jump off the London Bridge. A jazzy 1960s score backs up this dark comedy as it takes aim at Tiny Tim’s incessant goodness and the saccharine ending of the original A Christmas Carol story.
New City Stage Company
Although the New City Stage Company attracts equity actors and union crews, fostering local talent has been a priority since it began producing in 2006. Commissioning and mounting professional productions of contemporary works and classic plays, the company strives to stimulate patrons and students with shows that are often edgy and thought provoking, like a finely whetted Rubik’s cube. But whether hosting a Philadelphia premier or staging an award-winning rarity, the theater group always places an emphasis on the work of local playwrights and performers.
