It’s the final concert of their “Raise the Praise” Tour, and the Altar Boyz––five small-town friends named Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan, and Abraham––believe it’s their destiny to save the world one fan at a time. The fivesome, who joined musical talents to become a picture-perfect pop group on a mission to spread the good word, converts fans with choreographed dancing and one infectious hook after another in songs such as the abstinence anthem “Something About You” and the hip-shaker “Rhythm in Me.” Throughout the performance, the Boyz repeatedly check their onstage “Soul Sensor DX-12” that displays the number of heavy souls in attendance, with a goal of making the reading drop to zero.<p>
Altar Boyz, which spent five years off-Broadway, parodies model boy bands such as the Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, or Tom Brokaw’s Funky Bunch, yet as they do, they make the audience forget it’s watching a spoof. The New York Times admitted that the passion of the performance and the sincerity of the songs softens the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, making up a show that “sends you home with a smile.”
