Mercedes Benz of Seattle Pacific Northwest Historic Races
This year, the 25th Mercedes Benz of Seattle Pacific Northwest Historic Races event commemorates two anniversaries in one. The Races celebrate their silver anniversary, and 2013 also marks 50 years since the debut of the Porsche 911. Throughout the weekend, fans observe both milestones through a chorus of revving engines and squealing tires as vintage rides roar around a 2.25-mile track. Although an official schedule has not been established, a tentative lineup features seven different groupings, including exhibition and sports racers and historic automobiles. On Friday evening, pint-sized roadsters seize the pavement at PGP Motorsports Park as registered teams compete in the fourth-annual Karting Challenge, which is free and open for public viewing.
In 1985, Dick Mattei—a Seattle-based Porsche enthusiast—decided to start an even bigger collection. Namely, he wanted to create a vintage racing organization the Pacific Northwest could call its own. After recruiting more than 100 like-minded car buffs, Mattei officially established SOVREN—an acronym for the Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts. In 1991, SOVREN Guild was formed with the sole purpose of working with SOVREN to produce the Pacific Northwest Historic Vintage Car Race, a fund-raising collaboration with the Seattle Children's hospital that persists to this day. The guild now has over 85 members who are highly active in the Pacific Northwest Historics and has raised over $8.6 million to date for the Seattle Children's hospital.
