Paul Mesner Puppets Presents Anansi the Spider

Arachnophobic adults and kids might change their minds once they meet Paul Mesner Puppets' take on Anansi the Spider. This eight-legged trickster is covered in cuddly fur and wears a giddy grin—even when he's making a tiger play horsey or pulling other magical stunts. Colorful animal characters drawn from African and Caribbean folktales fill a quartet of stories in the Ashanti tradition: Tiger Becomes a Riding Horse, How the Stories Came to the World, Dinner for Two, and Magic for Five. Set to the intricate beats of drummer Patrick Conway, the whimsical tales deliver universal messages about honesty as Anansi becomes the victim of his own chicanery.

Paul Mesner Puppets

Before Paul Mesner Puppets became a beloved Kansas City institution, its namesake had to pull a lot of strings and sew miles of plush. Mesner started with a small puppet theater in Omaha, then went abroad to study at the legendary International Institute of Puppetry in Charleville-Mezier, France, before founding his current company in Kansas City in 1987. Since that time, Mesner and his crew have crafted every puppet by hand, including finger puppets, rod and stick puppets, marionettes, shadow puppets, and even huge puppets that require an entire human being or a large stack of dogs to operate. The company performs for audiences of up to 38,000 per year at home, when it's not on the road—past gigs have included the Henson International Festival of Puppetry in New York and the Cultural Arts Festival at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Park City, Utah.
