Winner of Austin Critics Table Awards for the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons in the Best Musical Production category, Penfold Theatre Company brings to life The Pavilion, a tale of teenage love revisited 20 years later. Penned by Craig Wright, who has written for Six Feet Under and Lost, and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, The Pavilion examines the story of Peter and Kari, former sweethearts who reconnect at their 20-year high-school reunion. On a set dreamed up and realized by designer David Utley, the characters reconvene in a glowing pavilion made more luminous by the dark sky, light-ensconced trees, and hanging purple lanterns that surround it.
To get audience members in the reunion mindset, the theater space has been embellished with artifacts from the imaginary Pine City High School's 1992 heyday, when mascots were just wild animals that chewed their way into the gym. While mingling with other guests, theatergoers can pose for retro prom-style pictures before watching the drama unfold on stage.
