In a Nutshell

Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein leads an orchestra that manipulates strings and tickles ivories in classic and contemporary compositions

The Fine Print

Conductors got their name by both guiding orchestras and wielding copper batons that deflect lightning away from the brass section. Behold an electrifying performance with this GrouponLive deal to see the Peninsula Symphony. For $59, you get a package for one (up to a $132 total value), which includes:

  • One Best of Season CD (a $12 value)
  • General-admission tickets for one (up to a $40 value each) to the following shows:
    • Tango! with Quartet San Francisco on Friday, January 18, or Saturday, January 19
    • A Virtuoso Debut/Brahms’s First on Friday, March 15, or Saturday, March 16
    • Beethoven’s Pastorale on Friday, May 17, or Saturday, May 18

All Friday performances are held at Fox Theatre, and all Saturday performances are held at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts at De Anza College. All shows begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m.

Tango! with Quartet San Francisco

In this multidiscipline performance, the Peninsula Symphony teams up with Quartet San Francisco, including its founder, Jeremy Cohen. The centerpiece of the evening is an exploration of tangos by Agustin Bardi, their playful intensity brought to vivid life by the passionate dancing of Sandor and Parissa of Tango Vivo.

A Virtuoso Debut/Brahms’s First

Headlined by the debut of a winner of the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, this evening centers around Johannes Brahms’s Symphony no. 1. The piece’s foreboding opening gives way to lucid, light woodwinds, and periodic harmonic bursts from the ensemble. Paul Hindemith’s March from Symphonic Metamorphosis, as its name implies, explores the tonal intricacies of a trumpet waking to find itself transformed into a gigantic tuba.

Beethoven’s Pastorale

This evening marks a series of firsts for the symphony, beginning with its premiere performance of Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, whose swelling strains roll and dip like the waters until erupting into an exultant tempest of strings. Lee Actor’s Piano Concerto receives its world premiere with the help of pianist Daniel Glover. The evening and season close with Beethoven’s Symphony no. 6 (Pastorale), the beloved aural soundscape evoking lush forests and blooming meadows.

Though Peninsula Symphony sometimes offers a discounted price online, this Groupon is still the best deal available.

Peninsula Symphony

Peninsula Symphony, founded in 1949 with the goal of enriching communities with affordable musical productions, grew from a grassroots ensemble to a 90-plus-member orchestra of well-trained local musicians. Music Director Mitchell Sardou Klein leads the ensemble with a steady baton, a sharp ear, and the stamina to carry on through the inevitable triple encore.

The Groupon Guide to: Diary Greetings

Fewer and fewer people are keeping diaries now that it's possible to quickly broadcast your feelings on social-media sites such as Facebook, TalkHole, and Spewr. If you're holding on to the past, at least keep your diary entries fresh by starting them with one of these "Dear Diary" substitutes:

  • Hello, book
  • Good to see you, paper thing
  • Diary, you're the only one that listens to me. Here I go!
  • Hey journal, you ready for some illegible scribbles?
  • Good morning, and thank you for letting me do this to you again.
  • OK, time to cover your body in my feelings.
  • Greetings, may our time together be fruitful (kiss the diary).
  • Vrrrrooom! Here comes the choo-choo pen down the diary tracks!
  • I've done terrible things and these are a few.

Spewr lets you share your feelings with friends—on the Internet!
