The Fine Print

Although 20% of babies who were exposed to classical music in utero become doctors or lawyers, 100% of babies born on stage during a classical music performance become Bill Gates. Upgrade your evening with this GrouponLive deal to see a classical concert presented by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. Choose from the following shows and seating options:

Camera Lucida at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on Tuesday, March 5, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.
  • For $18, you get one ticket for seating in section C (up to a $35 value).
  • For $20, you get one ticket for seating in section B (up to a $40 value).

San Diego’s Camera Lucida brings two of Brahms’ earliest works to life. Ivory-tickler Reiko Uchida takes center stage in the piano-based quartets, joined by artistic director and cellist Charles Curtis, San Diego Symphony principal violist Che-Yen Chen, concertmaster Jeff Thayer, and Thayer’s priceless 1708 Stradivarius. Brahms’ Piano Quartet no. 1 in G Minor displays an unexpected maturity with a boldly delineated yet melancholy melody, and his Piano Quartet no. 2 in A Major takes a more sprightly and delicate form.

St. Louis Symphony at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on Monday, March 18, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
  • For $15, you get one ticket for seating in the grand tier (up to a $30 value).
  • For $25, you get one ticket for seating in the promenade (up to a $50 value).

Following a preshow lecture by the LA Philharmonic’s Christopher Russell, the St. Louis Symphony makes its first Orange County appearance in nearly two decades. Strauss’ Don Juan opens the show with a romantic-tone poem perfumed with roses and brimstone. Rouse’s Flute Concerto follows, featuring soloist Mark Sparks’ woodwind flitting across the soundscape with an airy impulsiveness. The evening continues with Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, another of Strauss’ narrative symphonies. The horn and D clarinet carry the trickster’s theme, a rising melody that sinks into a rhythmic three-note punch line. The program concludes with an instrumental version of Hindemith’s opera Mathis der Maler, which mirrors 1930s Germany with its story of a painter working under a restrictive political climate.

Ray Chen at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on Saturday, April 6, at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
  • For $18, you get one ticket for seating in section C (up to a $35 value).
  • For $20, you get one ticket for seating in section B (up to a $40 value).

Since his 2011 debut album, Virtuoso, 22-year-old violinist Ray Chen has garnered acclaim from some of the world’s best musicians and critics. According to BBC Music Magazine’s Martin Cotton, Chen’s “violin playing [is] of the highest order. It’s not just [his] superb technique, but his sense of pacing in the music that is so striking: there’s always time for the music to unfold, even at speed.” That speed is very much in evidence at this show: after Mozart’s buoyant Violin Sonata in A Major come metronome-burners including Bach’s elaborately patterned Partita no. 3 in E Major, followed by a trio of Sarasate works at a distinctively blistering pace.

St. Lawrence String Quartet at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
  • For $18, you get one ticket for seating in section C (up to a $35 value).
  • For $20, you get one ticket for seating in section B (up to a $40 value).

The St. Lawrence String Quartet is a hard-working group, managing to fit international tours and more than 100 concerts annually in between their regular duties as Stanford University’s ensemble-in-residence. On April 21, Dean Corey, president of the Philharmonic Society, welcomes them to Orange County by delivering an introductory lecture on Beethoven at 2 p.m. Then, Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major opens the concert in a characteristically bright and chipper mood. A more modern work from Golijov follows, and the concert closes on Beethoven’s majestic String Quartet no. 12 in E-Flat Major. After a series of emphatic opening chords, the violin breaks away to carry the melody with the courtly precision of an archduke offering piggyback rides.
