Side by Side by Sondheim
Celebrating the best of a musical legend's storied career, Side by Side by Sondheim has achieved some renown as a work in its own right. It's snagged nominations for multiple Tony Awards and a Laurence Olivier Award, not to mention a surprise win for World's Best Dad. A small cast sings such hits as “Comedy Tonight” from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, “Broadway Baby” from Follies, and, of course, “Side by Side by Side” from Company. A narrator strings the set pieces together, telling the stories behind the songs and introducing a few dropped tunes such as “Can That Boy Foxtrot” and “Marry Me a Little.” Though the show focuses on Company, all of Sondheim's major musicals are represented, from West Side Story to A Little Night Music. Reviewing the first Broadway production in 1977, the New York Times' Clive Barnes called it "Stephen Sondheim revealed as Stephen Sondheim has never been revealed before," noting that the songs "have taken on a new sheen" in a show that's "happy, funny, witty and so compassionate."
