Play It by Heart
After a long and illustrious career in country music, Jeannine Jasper just wants to live a quiet life with an old flame. But the country music industry has other plans, shifting its focus to Jeannine’s wild little sister, Jamie Lynn. Enter their mother, Naomi, who attempts to take control of her daughters’ lives even as a family secret creates havoc among the trio. With warmth, heart, and toe-tapping melody, the show examines the sometimes knotted nature of familial ties and the healing power of love.
The new musical features a book by Tony and Pulitzer Award-winning Brian Yorkey and a score by David Spangler, Jerry Taylor, and R.T. Robinson, and director Kevin Moore couldn’t be happier about how the music and words interact. “When you get down to the heart and soul of really good country music,” Moore shares, “they tell a story, and these songs all do that very well.”
The Human Race Theatre Company
The mission of The Human Race Theatre Company is as expansive as its name: “We present universal themes that explore the human condition and startle us all into a renewed awareness of ourselves.” That goal has served the organization since 1986, when the artists were staging productions in any venue that would have them. But as their company grew, so did their influence. Now the nationally-recognized company performs in the 212-seat Loft Theatre, where it mounts productions of new and beloved works, including Oliver!, Avenue Q, and Play It by Heart, created from start to finish especially for its audiences. The members share their passion for theater off stage as well, operating educational programs that encourage a lifelong love of the performing arts.
