In a Nutshell

Influential country-music legend celebrates the 25th anniversary of his debut in a show packed with hits such as “Forever and Ever, Amen”

The Fine Print

Country music harks back to a more courteous era, when kids still called women "ma'am" and men "daddy ma'am." Tip your hat to the good ol' days with this GrouponLive deal to see Randy Travis at the Majestic Theatre San Antonio on Sunday, November 18, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Because the ticket is a G-Pass, Groupon customers can use it to enter the venue directly; they will not need to redeem their Groupon at will call. Choose between the following reserved seating options:

  • For $27, you get one G-Pass for mezzanine seating (up to a $55.40 value, including all fees).
  • For $33, you get one G-Pass for orchestra seating (up to a $65.65 value, including all fees).

Randy Travis never set out to start a “new traditionalist” movement in country music. The North Carolina native’s breakthrough debut, Storms of Life, just happened to arrive right at the time when country’s romance with pop music was going over the line. The stylistic offspring of honky-tonk heroes such as Hank Williams, George Jones, and Lefty Frizzell, Randy’s debut brought country-music radio back to its roots—and the old fashioned sounded brand new again.

There’s an authenticity to Randy Travis’s voice that can’t be faked. It winds like a Kentucky road and dives into wells of heartbreak with its jeans still on. Storms of Life’s hit singles, such as “On the Other Hand” and “Diggin’ Up Bones,” seemed like they’d moseyed in from the Grand Ole Opry in 1925, and in 1987’s Always & Forever, Randy cemented his status as pure country’s hero with a string of No. 1 singles that refuse to age. Among these, “Forever and Ever, Amen,” acts as a sonic anniversary gift to everyone that continues to incite two-steps and renewed vows across the world.

Since his arrival, Randy has sold more than 20 million records and earned a trove of accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music statuettes, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Despite all the kudos, he never lost his folksy “yes ma’am” charm and penchant for smart song choices, and he never gussied up to modern country’s trends. Instead, young artists strive to be like him, a phenomenon readily apparent throughout his recent album 25th Anniversary Celebration, which features duets with fellow legends Willie Nelson and Ray Price, current superstars such as Brad Paisley and Tim McGraw, and unlikely collaborations with Don Henley and Kristin Chenoweth.

For this special anniversary tour, fans can expect a crop of greatest hits from Randy’s catalog, all performed with a master showman’s grace and delivered with his inimitable drawl. To keep the genuine country feel going throughout the night, Rosehill continues its ascent up the country-radio charts with catchy singles, such as “Crooked Thoughts” and “When the Flame Goes Out,” that sport harmonies resembling a rodeo-reared Simon and Garfunkel.

Due to security restrictions, G-Passes must be printed out and presented in person at the event. They cannot be redeemed through Groupon's mobile app.

The Groupon Guide to: Phone Greetings

Any boring person with a tongue in their face can pick up the phone and say “hello.” Here are some creative ways to answer your phone:

  • "Hi, who is this? No, don’t tell me! I want to have a confusing conversation."

  • "Hello, you’ve reached the Walking and Talking hotline. I just got a brand-new mobile phone, so I’ll be moving around my house and going to the bathroom while I talk to you."

  • "Gavin sucks! Just kidding, Gavin, you don’t suck. Oh, this is Gavin’s mom? Oh, I’m so sorry, Mrs. Gavin. I’ll go get my mom."

  • "Hello, Culver household. Margaret speaking. Edmond listening. Children not listening but tucked snugly in their beds. Fear hiding quietly under the floorboards."

  • "Hey there! Thanks for calling! I’m busy, so call back and leave a message."

  • "Hey there! Oh gosh darn it, you were trying to leave that message, weren’t you? OK, here we go again."

  • "Hey there! OH, SHOOT! OH, SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT!"

What’s with Gavin’s voice?
