The Funky Meters

As brethren of New Orleans’s beloved Brothers Neville, keyboardist Art “Poppa Funk” Neville has the gift of groove in his DNA. Along with founding bass player George Porter, Jr., “Poppa Funk” and The Meters have supplied acts such as The Rolling Stones, Dr. John, and Patti LaBelle with sweltering backbeats and swampy grooves since 1967. After the original lineup parted ways in the late ‘70s, The Meters was reborn as the Funky Meters in 1994 when Neville and Porter recruited guitarist Brian Stoltz and drummer Russell Batiste, Jr. Having conquered Bonnaroo and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the airtight outfit infiltrates venues with their potent New Orleans sound.

The Greyboy Allstars

With their latest album Inland Emperor, The Greyboy Allstars make a triumphant return to music after nearly six years of hibernation. Starring soul-and-funk spinning DJ Greyboy and his band of horn, keys, and guitar virtuosos, The Greyboy Allstars have been pioneers of the acid jazz movement since their influential 1995 debut West Coast Boogaloo. Live, the band locks into the groove and unleashes contagious good vibes in a set of sultry shuffles and stimulating jams.

JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound

Chicago’s own post-punk soul outfit continues their meteoric rise as they share the bill with their sonic forefathers. Pegged as “one of the hottest US soul acts” by Britain’s MOJO Magazine, the group has scaled the ladder of success, leaving buckets of sweat on every rung. With a stage presence that makes James Brown seem slothful, lead singer JC Brooks turns the mic stand into a blazing pulpit while conducting his brakeless train of a band. The group electrifies audiences during numbers that skillfully jump-rope genres, such as a fiery rendition of Wilco’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”
